The Scientific Committee

Following lengthy discussion, the Scientific Committee was formally established as a subcommittee of the Board, in 1981 to plan future scientific developments for SIOP:

  1. initiate new trials and studies by inviting interested groups to devise new protocols and investigate studies, In this respect it is responsible for designating a rapporteur from the members of the scientific committee for each of the active SIOP clinical trials. Each rapporteur will be responsible for monitoring the results of the assigned study and may be expected to provide a critique at the appropriate time in the scientific programme at the annual meeting when the clinical trial results are reported and discussed. The rapporteur may ask that the clinical trial be included in the scientific programme when discussion is warranted in the rapporteur's opinion.
  2. assist the local organising committee in devising the main theme and planning the scientific sessions of the annual meeting, and
  3. disseminate information to the membership on current studies and collect information on national and international studies from other groups.

The Committee meets twice a year between annual conferences and once during the conference.

The Scientific Committee consists of 10 members representing the discipline groups within SIOP. Two will be experts in clinical trials, two will be experts in translational research, and one each will be chosen from the disciplines of surgery, radiation oncology, pathology, epidemiology, bio-statistics and nursing.

The term of office for members will be three years. The Chairman, elected by the members of the Committee, will serve for three years and is eligible for another three-year term. Members of the Committee may not serve for more than two consecutive terms. They may, however, be re-elected after an interval of three years.

The Committee has the power to co-opt additional members for specific purposes approved by the Board.
