THE JOURNAL

"Pediatric Blood and Cancer" (PBC),  formerly "Medical Pediatric Oncology" (MPO)

Aims and Scope

Pediatric Blood and Cancer (PBC) is an international journal that provides broad coverage of basic and clinical research in the malignant diseases of childhood as they affect the pediatric group, adolescents, and young adults. PBC publishes original articles on the diagnosis, treatment, epidemiology, biology, and molecular and clinical genetics of these diseases.

One of the principal aims of the journal is to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas concerning fundamental research and clinical advances in the management of children with cancer. Through its feature, "International Notes", health professionals in less affluent countries are able to communicate their methods of managing both research and clinical care in the pages of the journal. These aspects of cancer management are emphasized by the fact that the SIOP Continental Presidents are members of the Editorial Board ex officio, and there are specific designated Associate Editors for "International Notes" and for Eastern Europe and Francophone Africa.

PBC and SIOP

In 1987, Medical and Pediatric Oncology (MPO), published by Wiley Liss, New York, was appointed as the Society's official journal. The subscription price, which is considerably below the normal rate, is paid to the publisher on behalf of SIOP members, from membership fees received.  Each issue is sent directly to members upon publication from New York. The agreement also allows for programmes and abstracts for the Society's annual meetings to be published by Wiley Liss.

Since January 2001, members of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology have been entitled to complimentary access to the online edition of Medical & Pediatric Oncology.

The PBC website is located within Wiley InterScience, the electronic publishing initiative of John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

In January Wiley mails information packages to each new SIOP member, containing instructions on how and where to register for PBC in Wiley InterScience. Click here for the instructions.

The online version of PBC provides a wealth of special features that take full advantage of online publishing. SIOP readers can access Table of Contents, Abstracts and the full text of all articles published since 1997. Beyond full-text access to MPO/PBC articles, the online version of PBC offers enhanced browsing and searching across all Wiley journals. Those journals include Cancer, International Journal of Cancer, Genes, Chromosomes & Cancer, American Journal of Hematology, Journal of Surgical Oncology, and Psycho-Oncology. Readers also have the option of moving seamlessly from a reference in an MPO journal article to either the cited article on the publisher’s site, or the Medline entry. This latter capability is provided by CrossRefÒ , a multi-publisher initiative that allows for journal linking from one publisher to another.

The online version of MPO (now PBC) was launched in 1997. MPO was included in the initial rollout of Wiley InterScience electronic journals. Wiley InterScience now contains more than 300 journals, in full text dating back to January 1997. Since that initial launch the online and print versions of MPO (PBC) have published concurrently. Now, however, it is not uncommon for the electronic version of PBC to appear online 2 weeks ahead of the mailing of its print counterpart.
